Trump Buys $5 Million in Musk’s SpaceX Bonds, Raising Conflict of Interest Concerns

US President Donald Trump invested up to 5 million dollars in bonds of Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The purchase occurred on August 18 – just two days before the signing of a key memorandum supporting the commercial space industry in the USA. The timing of the transaction raises serious questions about a potential conflict of interest, although the White House emphasizes that the president’s portfolio is managed by independent financial advisors.

Bond Purchase Just Before Government Memorandum Signing

A financial disclosure released on October 8 reveals that Donald Trump purchased unsecured SpaceX bonds worth 1 to 5 million dollars with a fixed annual yield of 5.35% and maturity in July 2031. These debt instruments represent a loan to the company without collateralizing specific assets. The key attention was not drawn by the type of security itself, but by the fact that the transaction occurred just 48 hours before a crucial political decision by the administration.

On August 20, the president signed a memorandum intended to launch a new era of American space transportation and ensure over 1,000 commercial launches and landings annually by 2030. The White House aims to achieve this goal by accelerating the permit approval process and simplifying environmental assessments. SpaceX, as the largest private player in the American space sector, directly benefits from the new regulations, which casts a harsh light on the connection between government decisions and private investment.

Blind Trust, or Investment Calculation?

The White House denies any wrongdoing, arguing that Trump does not personally decide on specific purchases and sales, as his assets are managed by independent institutions through discretionary accounts. Furthermore, the purchase of SpaceX bonds represented just one of more than 500 transactions executed during August. During the same period, the president also invested in other tech giants – for example, up to 25 million dollars in Meta stock and 6 million dollars in Microsoft.

Although the released documents do not contain proof of abuse of power for personal gain, the chronological proximity of the actions opens a legitimate debate about transparency. While third-party portfolio management limits a politician’s direct interference, it does not eliminate all ethical risks when government regulations impact the businesses of companies in which the head of state holds capital. Thus, strict oversight and a clear separation of political decision-making from personal assets remain crucial for public trust.
