Article content – Online and software wallets

Online or software?

Online wallets are available anywhere with the internet and store keys on the provider’s servers, which brings convenience but also security risks. They are ideal for users who appreciate ease of access and are willing to accept a certain level of trust in the provider.

Software wallets require installation on a personal device and store keys locally, increasing security at the expense of convenience. Suitable for those who prefer control and security and are willing to take responsibility for backing up and protecting their keys

Online crypto wallets

Online crypto wallets are digital services that allow users to manage their cryptocurrencies over the internet. They allow cryptocurrencies to be easily sent, received and accessed from anywhere with the internet, but they are managed by the operators of these services. While they are very convenient, it is important to be mindful of security as online wallets can be more susceptible to hacking than offline alternatives.

Wirex

A cryptocurrency wallet that allows users to store, buy and sell cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum and Ripple. Transactions can be made in euros and dollars using SEPA bank transfer or credit card. Unfortunately, neither the Czech crown nor the Czech language is supported by this platform. Security measures include two-factor authentication, fingerprint verification and transaction verification via email and SMS. Wirex also offers a VISA card, but importantly, users do not own the private keys to their cryptocurrencies, which can pose a risk.

MyEtherWallet

MyEtherWallet (MEW) represents a key player in the world of cryptocurrencies, especially for those focused on Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens. Not only does it allow for easy asset management on the Ethereum network, but its integration with MetaMask extends its functionality beyond that system, offering access to the Binance Smart Chain, Polygon Network and more. MEW is not only intuitive and mobile-friendly, but also offers a higher degree of security when linked to hardware wallets. This combination of functionality, user-friendliness and security makes MyEtherWallet the ideal tool for both newcomers and advanced users in the crypto space. This crypto wallet is not available in Czech either.

Computer crypto wallets

Computer cryptocurrency wallets are programs installed on a personal computer or laptop that allow users to store, send and receive cryptocurrency. These wallets generate private keys, which are the security codes necessary to access cryptocurrency funds, and allow users to transact on the cryptocurrency network. The security of these wallets depends on the security of the computer on which they are installed and the careful handling of secret keys and passwords.

Electrum

A bitcoin wallet specializing in the bitcoin network, known for its fast and clear interface. As a non-custodial wallet it gives users full control over their keys and security, increasing their accountability. It is open-source, which means that its source code is publicly available for review and audit, ensuring transparency and security. Electrum supports all major operating systems including Windows, OS X, Linux and Android, but is not available for iOS. This feature may reduce the range of users, but its advantage, which in turn widens the range, is the possibility of choosing from 35 languages, including Honorific.

MetaMask

MetaMask, which by the way is also available in Czech, as one of the other popular software wallets. Perhaps also due to the support of multiple cryptocurrency networks. It offers support for Ethereum and its ERC-20 tokens, compatibility with other blockchains like Binance Smart Chain and support for BEP-20 tokens. Key benefits include managing thousands of tokens and cryptocurrencies, security by connecting to wallet hardware, open-source access, storing user private keys, performing SWAP transactions on various exchanges, and supporting DeFi projects. The disadvantage is the inability to store Bitcoin and Litecoin. It is user-friendly, with the possibility to increase security by connecting a hardware wallet and linking to exchanges and DeFi projects. However, it notes a significant drawback in the inability to store Bitcoin. MetaMask used to be primarily an extension for web browsers, but now it also works through a mobile app.

Software wallets for mobile phone

Mobile crypto wallets are apps for your smartphone that allow you to manage and transact cryptocurrencies. They are a less secure but more convenient option, but their presence on a mobile phone makes them available to us anytime, anywhere. They allow users easy access to their digital assets, offering security through PINs, biometrics or seed phrases.

Trust Wallet

Trust Wallet is a cryptocurrency wallet with support for a wide range of cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Unlike previous wallets, this one is under your self-management. It excels in ease of use and security, where users have full control over their private keys. The collaboration with Binance increases its functionality, allowing the exchange of cryptocurrencies and access to decentralized applications. Trust Wallet supports over 4.5 million assets on over 65 blockchains, making it a versatile tool for managing and trading cryptocurrencies. Unfortunately, this wallet does not offer the option to switch to Czech language.

Coinomi

Founded in 2014, the crypto wallet is one of the first mobile cryptocurrency wallets known for the simplicity of its user interface. The wallet gives users full control over their private keys and offers enhanced security including PIN, fingerprint or Face ID. Coinomi does not support a web interface, which can be considered a security advantage as it prevents the potential risk of losing private keys in a hacking attack. The wallet supports more than 125 cryptocurrencies and can be backed up with a seed. Although the app may be perceived as less clear, overall Coinomi offers a robust cryptocurrency management solution with an emphasis on security and user privacy. Coinomi app is also available in Czech version.

Security

A factor mentioned many times is safety, which is really important for the choice. These wallets encrypt private keys on the user’s device, providing a strong first line of defense. It is essential to use strong passwords, activate two-factor authentication and regularly update the software to apply the latest security patches. Integration with hardware wallets adds an extra layer of security by keeping keys offline. Users should also be vigilant against phishing and malware. It is also important to back up your wallet, allowing you to recover assets in the event of loss or damage to your device. It is always necessary to be proactive and informed about the latest security threats to ensure maximum protection of cryptocurrencies.
