Bitcoin miners in the US are preparing for a massive winter storm. They may once again help stabilize the power grid

A massive winter storm, which is expected to hit much of the southern United States over the weekend, could also significantly affect the operations of Bitcoin miners. According to the meteorological company AccuWeather, the front is expected to stretch up to 1,800 miles—from western Texas to the Atlantic coast—and bring ice, heavy snowfall, and power outages to more than 60 million people. Miners are therefore preparing for the possibility that they will have to temporarily shut down their machines to relieve the overloaded power grid.

This is nothing new. Back in 2022, when Texas was hit by a severe winter storm, cryptocurrency miners in the state voluntarily reduced their activity to ease the burden on the power grid. According to Daniel Batten, a researcher in the environmental, social, and governance aspects of Bitcoin, it is very likely that a similar scenario will repeat itself now.

“As extreme weather events become more common around the world and more solar and wind power sources are connected to energy grids, the need to balance the load in Bitcoin mining will only grow,” Batten told Cointelegraph.

Miners as a “valve” for the energy grid

Bitcoin miners can act as a rapidly adjustable source of electricity demand. They typically settle near wind or solar power plants, where they can consume excess energy during periods of overproduction. However, when the grid faces a shortage, they can shut down in a short time and “release” the electricity elsewhere.

According to a report by the Digital Assets Research Institute this week, this model has saved Texas approximately $18 billion. Thanks to this, the state has avoided the need to build new gas-fired power plants, which would otherwise have to cover short-term fluctuations in demand.

Bitdeer: We are prepared for the storm

Singapore-based Bitdeer, which operates more than 293,000 mining facilities worldwide—including in Texas and other US states—does not expect the upcoming storm to cause any major disruptions to its operations.

“Storms don’t usually have a direct impact on our operations. We have standard procedures for seasonal changes, such as winterizing pipes. The team on site is monitoring the weather and is ready to respond,” said a company spokesperson.

He added that the Texas regulator, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, considers Bitcoin miners to be so-called “large flexible consumers.” Unlike most industrial companies, they can immediately reduce their electricity consumption upon request.

Bitdeer is ready to fully support the network in the event of supply restrictions,” the company said.

The US accounts for nearly 40% of global output

Miners form the backbone of the Bitcoin network. They verify transactions and record them in new blocks. The more miners participate, the higher the so-called hashrate—the computing power that ensures the security of the entire network.

The United States is currently the world’s largest mining center. The Hashrate Index platform estimates that the US controls nearly 38% of the global hashrate. Among the biggest players in the US market are Marathon Digital Holdings and Riot Platforms.

According to data from the federal Energy Information Administration, there were more than 137 cryptocurrency mining facilities in the US in 2024. The largest concentrations are in Texas, Georgia, and New York.

The upcoming winter storm will once again test not only the resilience of the energy infrastructure, but also the ability of the cryptocurrency industry to function as a flexible element that can play a stabilizing role in crisis situations.
