The Crypto Industry Is Funding US Elections at Record Levels. Hundreds of Millions of Dollars Are at Stake

Cryptocurrency companies are significantly strengthening their political influence in the United States. They have already invested nearly $200 million into the electoral cycle ahead of the November congressional elections. Their goal is to support candidates who are open to adopting clearer and broader rules for bitcoin, stablecoins, and other digital assets.

Cryptocurrencies have long ceased to be merely a technological or investment topic. In the United States, they are also becoming a significant political force. According to Reuters, cryptocurrency companies have already invested approximately $189 million in influencing the electoral cycle ahead of the 2026 congressional elections.

This is not just about supporting one political party. The crypto industry is financing both Republican and Democratic candidates who are willing to support legislation more favorable to digital asset businesses. The strategic goal is to create a sufficiently strong group of legislators in Congress who will promote further development of the cryptocurrency market regardless of the outcome of the battle between Democrats and Republicans.

Crypto Industry Surpasses Its Own Electoral Record

According to an analysis by Public Citizen, approximately 37 percent of all corporate money invested so far in political structures associated with the 2026 elections comes from the cryptocurrency industry. Cryptocurrency companies have thus become the largest source of corporate political contributions in the current electoral cycle.

The $189 million amount has already surpassed the more than $170 million that the crypto industry invested in the 2024 elections. Those campaigns helped get a number of digital asset-friendly candidates into Congress and created the political conditions for the adoption of the first significant federal cryptocurrency legislation.

Among the largest corporate contributors are Ripple, Coinbase, and Crypto.com. Money is also flowing from other cryptocurrency entrepreneurs and investment groups. Public Citizen also points out that the actual volume of funds may be even higher, as available statistics do not capture all expenditures at the state level or financing through structures that do not have to disclose all their donors.

Fairshake Plays a Key Role

The central tool of the crypto industry’s political strategy is the super PAC Fairshake. This is a political committee that can accept virtually unlimited contributions and subsequently finance its own advertising campaigns to support or defeat specific candidates.

Fairshake does not send money directly to candidate campaigns. Instead, it pays for television and internet advertising, voter mobilization, and other activities that can significantly influence the outcome of individual electoral battles.

According to current data from the Federal Election Commission, Fairshake received more than $135 million from the beginning of 2025 to the end of May 2026. During the same period, it reported expenditures exceeding $74 million. More recent data cited by Reuters speaks of raised funds amounting to more than $136 million.

Fairshake also operates through affiliated organizations focused on different parts of the political spectrum. Protect Progress primarily supports Democratic candidates, while Defend American Jobs focuses mainly on Republicans. The crypto industry is thus not trying to secure the victory of one party, but supports politicians based on their stance toward digital assets.

Millions of Dollars Flow to Specific Electoral Battles

According to a Reuters overview, Fairshake’s largest support to date has gone to Republican Barry Moore from Alabama. The organization spent approximately $9.43 million supporting him. Moore has previously supported several proposals favorable to the cryptocurrency sector and also advocated for legislative establishment of a U.S. strategic bitcoin reserve.

Fairshake invested approximately $7.17 million in supporting Republican Andy Barr from Kentucky, who has advocated for stablecoin regulation as well as broader rules for the cryptocurrency market.

Significant amounts are also going to Democratic candidates. Christian Menefee from Texas received support of approximately $6.47 million, Jasmine Clark from Georgia $4.21 million, and Adrian Boafo from Maryland around $3.29 million.

The cryptocurrency sector’s strategy is clear. Instead of openly aligning with a single party, it is trying to create a bipartisan group of politicians who will be willing to advance its legislative priorities.

After Stablecoins Comes the Battle for the Entire Crypto Market

The crypto industry has already shown once that political investments can deliver concrete legislative results. In July 2025, the United States adopted the GENIUS Act, which created the first federal regulatory framework for payment stablecoins.

As stated in the White House’s official summary, the law requires regulated stablecoins to be fully backed by liquid assets, such as U.S. dollars or short-term government bonds. Issuers must also regularly disclose the composition of their reserves. President Donald Trump signed the law on July 18, 2025.

However, the sector’s ambitions do not end with the adoption of stablecoin rules. Now the cryptocurrency companies’ attention is shifting to the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act proposal, which is meant to create a broader framework for the operation of the American market for digital assets.

The proposal should primarily more clearly divide powers between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. It should also determine under what conditions a digital asset is considered a security, commodity, or other type of financial product.

CLARITY Act still awaits final approval

The U.S. House of Representatives approved the CLARITY Act on July 17, 2025, by a vote of 294 to 134. The bill also received support from 78 Democratic representatives, demonstrating that cryptocurrency regulation can gain support across the political spectrum. The voting results were published by the House Committee on Financial Services.

In May 2026, the bill was also advanced by the Senate Banking Committee. According to Reuters, the law would, among other things, define when cryptocurrency tokens are securities and when they are commodities. The Senate committee approved the bill by a vote of 15 to 9, but the law still requires support from the full Senate.

Negotiations are complicated by a dispute between cryptocurrency companies and traditional banks, for example regarding the ability to pay rewards to stablecoin holders. Discussion is also generated by anti-money laundering rules, the status of decentralized financial protocols, and consumer protection requirements.

According to a detailed analysis by Reuters, the CLARITY Act would also establish criteria for identifying a truly decentralized platform. Projects that retain the ability to block users, grant special permissions, or change how the system operates could be subject to similar obligations as traditional financial institutions.

Political money draws criticism

Representatives of the crypto industry claim they support politicians who understand blockchain technologies and want to prevent innovative companies from leaving the United States. According to them, the current U.S. regulatory environment is unclear and individual agencies apply different approaches to digital assets.

Critics, however, warn that such high contributions could influence the shape of future legislation in favor of the largest cryptocurrency companies. The organization Public Citizen considers record corporate campaign financing a risk to democratic decision-making, as politicians may be exposed to pressure not only through positive support, but also through negative advertising campaigns directed against their candidacy.

The debate therefore is not just about cryptocurrencies. It also opens a broader question of what role private company money should play in American elections and to what extent individual industries can influence the laws by which they themselves will be governed.

What the U.S. elections could mean for cryptocurrencies

The composition of the new Congress could fundamentally determine whether the United States adopts comprehensive rules for digital assets. Approval of the CLARITY Act could bring greater legal certainty to cryptocurrency exchanges, token issuers, digital asset custodians, and institutional investors.

Clearer rules could also facilitate the entry of more banks and traditional financial institutions into the cryptocurrency market. However, they will not by themselves guarantee an increase in the price of bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. Market developments will continue to depend on monetary policy, the economic situation, investor demand, and the final form of adopted legislation.

One thing is already clear. The crypto industry in the United States has transformed from a marginal technology sector into an exceptionally well-funded political force. Nearly $200 million invested in the current election cycle shows that the future of cryptocurrencies is not being decided only on exchanges and in technology companies, but increasingly also in polling stations and in the U.S. Congress.
