On Saturday, October 31, Bitcoin celebrated 18 years since the publication of its whitepaper. However, the grand celebrations are overshadowed by the bitter aftermath of the biggest theft on a cryptocurrency exchange in history, in which assets worth billions of dollars vanished from Binance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Whitepaper to Record Highs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On October 31, 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto published the document that laid the foundations of Bitcoin<\/a> as a direct response to the financial crisis of the time. The network offered an innovative alternative that could function entirely without banks or other intermediaries. One of the best-known historical moments came on May 22, 2010, when programmer Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas. At today’s prices, that transaction would be worth an incredible 780 million dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over eighteen years, Bitcoin has weathered many turbulent episodes, from the collapse of the Mt. Gox exchange and China’s crackdowns to the fall of FTX. The real turning point came with the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs<\/a> in early 2024, which opened the doors of traditional markets wide to the best-known cryptocurrency and gradually drove its price in October 2025 to record highs exceeding 125,000 dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrations in the Shadow of a Billion-Dollar Theft<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The milestone, however, was significantly overshadowed by another massive security incident. At the end of October 2026, the Binance<\/a> exchange became the target of a sophisticated cyberattack, with total damages reaching approximately 6.3 billion dollars. Although roughly 3 billion dollars were frozen immediately and the exchange promised full compensation to clients from its SAFU fund, the event caused strong nervousness in the market, and the investigation ultimately pointed to the involvement of North Korean hacking groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For all investors<\/a>, this incident is a harsh reminder of the risks associated with centralized platforms. The hackers did not breach the Bitcoin network itself, but rather the intermediary’s internal systems. Although the crypto world also faces other long-term technical challenges, led by quantum computers, the greatest vulnerability remains the human factor and the level of security of third parties to whom investors entrust their funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
