A new analysis shows that more than half of all bitcoins mined to date cannot be attributed to specific owners. In play are retail investors, large institutions, and digital wealth that perhaps no one can access anymore.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine that more than half of all existing gold bars were sitting in vaults whose owners no one could reliably identify. That is roughly the picture painted by the latest look at bitcoin&#8217;s ownership structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2026\/10\/26\/over-11-million-btc-can-t-be-linked-to-any-known-owner-even-after-wall-street-buying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to October data<\/a> from Galaxy Research, reported by CoinDesk, analysts were unable to link approximately 11.1 million bitcoins to known entities. That corresponds to roughly 55 percent of the more than 20 million coins mined so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a model price of $80,000 per bitcoin, that would represent assets worth nearly $900 billion. However, this does not mean the money is lost or that the cryptocurrency has no real owners. From an originally fringe technology project, it has grown into a financial asset purchased by investment funds, publicly traded companies, and even some governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key milestone was the approval of US exchange-traded funds tied to the spot price of bitcoin. These allowed investors to gain exposure to the cryptocurrency without having to set up their own digital wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It might therefore seem that an increasing share of bitcoins is passing under the control of well-known financial institutions. However, new data paints a considerably more complex picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Galaxy&#8217;s head of research, Alex Thorn, pointed out that despite growing institutionalization, more than half of existing bitcoins remain at addresses without an identified known owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to his interpretation, this suggests that a significant portion of the cryptocurrency may still be in the hands of individuals who hold their funds independently, outside centralized exchanges and investment firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So-called self-custody \u2014 managing one&#8217;s own cryptocurrency \u2014 is among the fundamental principles of bitcoin. An investor retains control over the private keys needed to manage their funds and does not need to entrust custody to any financial institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the data does not allow us to determine how many of those 11.1 million bitcoins are actually held by retail investors. Its owners, however, often remain hidden<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of bitcoin&#8217;s greatest paradoxes is that its transaction history is public, while the identity of its owners is not. Anyone can use a blockchain explorer to verify how many bitcoins are held at a specific address and what transactions have been carried out with it. The address itself, however, typically contains no name, home address, or other personal information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bitcoin is therefore not completely anonymous, but more precisely pseudonymous. Individual transactions <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoin.org\/en\/protect-your-privacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can be publicly tracked<\/a>, yet it may not be possible to determine the identity of those involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Analytics firms attempt to identify owners by combining transaction data, known cryptocurrency exchange addresses, and other publicly available information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if an exchange publicly confirms ownership of a particular wallet, analysts can track related transactions and identify other linked addresses. Even this method, however, is not infallible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An individual may use dozens of different addresses. Conversely, a single exchange wallet may hold the funds of thousands of customers. Identifying a wallet&#8217;s operator, therefore, does not necessarily reveal who economically owns the bitcoins. Some bitcoins will likely never be used again. In the cryptocurrency&#8217;s early years, individual coins had only negligible value. Many people therefore did not give their security the attention they would give it today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some owners lost hard drives containing digital wallets, others forgot their login credentials or lost their private keys. In other cases, owners may have died without passing on to their heirs the information needed to access the cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike a regular bank account, there is no central institution that can simply restore lost access credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a July 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitgo.com\/en\/resources\/blog\/bitcoins-invisible-burn-lost-coins-outpace-new-supply\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> by BitGo, estimates of permanently lost bitcoins range between roughly 2.3 and four million coins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are only estimates, however. A long-inactive wallet is not necessarily lost. Its owner may simply be waiting and could decide to sell their bitcoins several years from now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Likewise, it cannot be automatically assumed that all estimated lost bitcoins fall among the 11.1 million coins whose owners Galaxy Research was unable to identify. His true identity remains unknown, even though journalists and technology experts have been trying to uncover it for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to data cited by CoinDesk, Galaxy Research attributes approximately 1.12 million bitcoins to the so-called Patoshi pattern, a group of early mined blocks that analysts associate with one exceptionally active miner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is often assumed that this miner could have been Satoshi Nakamoto himself. However, his ownership of these coins has not been definitively proven. Interestingly, Galaxy lists this group separately among its identified categories of holders\u2014even though the real identity of the person or group behind the mining of these bitcoins remains unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This highlights the difference between attributing funds to a known set of addresses and actually revealing their ultimate owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-co-to-znamena-pro-cenu-bitcoinu\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does this mean for the price of bitcoin?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/crypto-globe.com\/en\/japan-wants-to-transfer-stocks-to-blockchain-investors-face-a-change-that-could-rewrite-how-exchanges-operate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investors<\/a>, information about unknown owners is not merely a curiosity. It also matters for understanding supply and demand in the cryptocurrency market. The total number of bitcoins is capped at 21 million. As <a href=\"https:\/\/help.blockstream.com\/education\/economics\/bitcoin-economics\/why-is-the-bitcoin-supply-limited\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blockstream<\/a> explains, new coins are created through mining, and their issuance is gradually slowing down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all bitcoins already mined, however, are actually available for trading. If someone holds their funds long-term and has no intention of selling, they do not immediately contribute to the market supply. Permanently lost bitcoins are then unlikely to ever return to the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may mean that the actually tradable amount of the cryptocurrency is considerably lower than its total mined supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What matters for bitcoin&#8217;s price is how many coins holders are willing to sell at a given price. If supply remains limited while investor interest grows, this can create upward price pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposite scenario occurs, however, when large long-term holders decide to move their funds to exchanges and sell. Such transactions can increase supply and contribute to price fluctuations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The figure of 11.1 million bitcoins with no known owner is therefore not in itself a signal of a future price rise or fall. It does not reveal how many of these coins are actually lost, how many are being held by long-term investors, or how many could enter the <a href=\"https:\/\/crypto-globe.com\/en\/crypto-market-suffers-billion-dollar-massacre-speculators-sent-55600-btc-to-exchanges-at-a-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">market<\/a> at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-nejvetsi-tajemstvi-bitcoinu-pretrvava\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bitcoin&#8217;s biggest mystery endures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although bitcoin is gradually becoming part of the traditional financial system, its ownership structure remains largely opaque. While publicly traded companies are subject to disclosure requirements and records of major shareholders, the bitcoin network does not require users to reveal their identity when creating a wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is a market in which the movement of individual coins can be tracked precisely, yet it is far more difficult to determine who actually controls them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Galaxy Research&#8217;s findings thus serve as a reminder of an important fact: even after years of growing interest from banks, funds, and other institutions, analysts still do not have a complete picture of who owns the largest cryptocurrency.
