Bitcoin once again failed to break above the $80,000 threshold, while markets face rising geopolitical tensions and more expensive oil. However, the biggest threat to risk assets is becoming the sharp strengthening of the Japanese yen, which is beginning to disrupt the popular carry trade investment strategy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oil above $100 and the threat of yen carry trade unwinding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bitcoin’s<\/a> attempt to return above the $80,000 level quickly hit strong selling pressure. Market sentiment has significantly deteriorated due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have pushed Brent crude oil prices above $100 per barrel. Higher energy prices are reviving inflation concerns and complicating central banks’ room for easing monetary policy, which naturally weakens investors’ appetite for risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The key story, however, is playing out in the currency market, where the Japanese yen has significantly strengthened to 153 JPY per dollar. This move poses a serious problem for the so-called yen carry trade \u2013 a strategy where investors<\/a> borrow yen cheaply and use them to buy higher-yielding assets such as U.S. stocks<\/a> or cryptocurrencies. When the yen starts to strengthen sharply, the economics of the entire trade collapse and investors are often forced to hastily liquidate their positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Record yen shorts and a crucial test for market bulls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The situation is further complicated by record speculative short positions on the yen, which exceeded 5 trillion JPY at the beginning of September. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has also hinted at the possibility of coordinated currency interventions, and the Bank of Japan<\/a> is expected to raise its base rate by 0.25 percentage points at its September meeting. The narrowing interest rate differential and the threat of forced short covering create the risk of a vicious cycle: a stronger yen leads to sales of risk assets, which in turn further accelerates the yen’s appreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a technical perspective, the $80,000 area remains a critical barrier for bitcoin. If the market cannot convincingly break through it and turn it into solid support, the combination of a stronger yen, more expensive oil, and rising risk aversion could trigger a deeper correction. The development of the USD\/JPY exchange rate is thus currently as important for the future direction of cryptocurrencies as bitcoin’s price chart itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
