Japan is preparing a system that would enable virtually instant settlement of stock and government bond trades. While today an investor waits up to several days for the final transfer of assets and money after completing a trade, the new model could significantly speed up the entire process.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Japan wants to use blockchain for fundamental modernization of its capital market infrastructure. The country&#8217;s financial regulator, ministry of finance, and central bank, together with financial institutions, are working on a system that could enable settlement of trades in stocks and Japanese government bonds in practically real time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/japan-eyes-blockchain-instant-stock-government-bond-settlement-nikkei-reports-2026-08-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Reuters reports<\/a>, Japan&#8217;s Financial Services Agency (FSA), the ministry of finance, the Bank of Japan, and private financial institutions are to participate in the project. The working group was established during this summer and the development plan for the new infrastructure is expected to be ready in early 2027. If the project receives the necessary approvals and development proceeds according to plan, the system could be launched at the beginning of the 2030s.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This represents a significant shift for blockchain. But the trade isn&#8217;t finalized yet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the average investor today, buying a stock appears almost instantaneous. They place an order with their broker, the order is executed, and the security appears in their portfolio. In the background, however, a separate settlement process continues, during which the final transfer of the security and money between individual market participants takes place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Japan, standard stock trades settle on a <strong>T+2<\/strong> basis, meaning two business days after the transaction is concluded. The country has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpx.co.jp\/english\/equities\/clearing-settlement\/tplus2-settlement-cycle\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">using<\/a> this system since 2019. For Japanese government bonds, the current settlement cycle is shorter and typically runs on T+1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The planned blockchain infrastructure is meant to eliminate this delay. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Reuters<\/a>, transactions could be settled in real time, allowing an investor to immediately reuse money obtained from selling an asset, for example. Reuters also points out that Japan is considering using the same infrastructure for international money transfers in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So it&#8217;s not just about investors not having to wait two days. Faster settlement can reduce the amount of capital that financial institutions need to hold for pending transactions, while also limiting the risk that a problem will arise between the closing of a trade and its final settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-co-by-na-tom-zmenil-blockchain-11\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What would blockchain change about this?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The essence of Japan&#8217;s plan is not to move regular <a href=\"https:\/\/crypto-globe.com\/en\/bitcoin-miner-stocks-are-rising-investors-are-betting-their-infrastructure-will-be-used-by-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">stocks<\/a> to cryptocurrency exchanges or to create a decentralized version of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Blockchain is meant to function primarily as a technological layer enabling synchronization of the transfer of securities with the transfer of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Japan Financial Services Agency already announced support in February for an experiment examining the use of blockchain for transferring rights to Japanese government and corporate bonds, investment funds, and stocks. Part of the project also includes linking the transfer of securities with payment via stablecoins. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsa.go.jp\/en\/conference\/minister\/2026\/20260213.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">When announcing the project, the FSA stated<\/a> that major Japanese brokerage firms and megabanks are preparing the experiment, and its goal is to improve the current trading and settlement process for securities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fundamental concept in this case is delivery versus payment, or DvP. The transfer of the security and the corresponding payment are to occur simultaneously. Either both parts of the transaction take place, or neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is precisely where blockchain can offer one of its main advantages. Instead of several institutions sequentially updating their own databases and then verifying among themselves whether all parts of the transaction were correctly completed, the transfer of the asset and payment can occur synchronously on a connected digital infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsa.go.jp\/common\/conference\/danwa\/20260520_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">materials from Japan&#8217;s FSA<\/a>, instant DvP transfers can reduce settlement risk as well as the operational burden on financial institutions. Japan wants to utilize certain properties of blockchain technology while maintaining a regulated system for recording securities ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the FSA, transfers of rights recorded on the blockchain are to be simultaneously reflected in traditional book-entry accounts managed by securities dealers in accordance with applicable Japanese legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/crypto-globe.com\/en\/top-10-most-interesting-blockchain-projects-that-are-still-flying-under-the-radar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Blockchain<\/a> is therefore not intended to replace the current legal framework. It aims to modernize the technical infrastructure that underlies it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an important distinction for investors as well. The development of blockchain in the world of banks and stock exchanges does not automatically mean the onset of decentralized finance in the form we know from the cryptocurrency market. Equally important is resolving what the investor will pay for it with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If, for example, a tokenized bond is transferred within seconds, but the payment itself then travels through the traditional banking system for several hours, much of the benefit of the new technology disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why it&#8217;s interesting that Japanese experiments also include stablecoins. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsa.go.jp\/en\/conference\/minister\/2026\/20260213.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The FSA already stated in February<\/a> that one of the goals of the demonstration project is to link the transfer of securities rights with payment using stablecoins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Japanese regulator is also supporting other projects related to digital money. In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsa.go.jp\/common\/conference\/danwa\/20260520_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">May materials<\/a>, for example, it mentions an experiment by Japan&#8217;s three largest banks in jointly issuing stablecoins, as well as a project focused on transfers of tokenized bank deposits between different financial institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it&#8217;s possible to tokenize not only the security but also the money used to purchase it, the entire transaction can take place within a single digital infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-japonsko-neni-samo-tokenizace-zacina-zajimat-cely-financni-svet-31\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Japan is not alone. Tokenization is starting to interest the entire financial world<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The significance of the Japanese project also lies in the fact that it&#8217;s not an isolated experiment. Tokenization of traditional financial assets is gradually becoming one of the main technological topics in global banking and capital markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just shortly before the Japanese plan was announced, for example, India, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india-plans-first-tokenised-bond-issue-september-sources-say-2026-08-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Reuters<\/a>, prepared its first issuance of tokenized corporate bonds. The pilot project is to use blockchain for rapid settlement, and the purchase is expected to utilize India&#8217;s central bank digital currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar developments show that financial institutions are no longer just addressing the question of whether to use blockchain at all. They are increasingly focusing on which parts of traditional financial infrastructure this technology can actually speed up or make cheaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-proc-je-to-dulezite-pro-bezneho-investora-35\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why this matters for the average investor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the perspective of a retail investor, the most important question is not whether the sale of a Japanese stock will one day be settled in two seconds instead of two days. However, such a simple connection doesn&#8217;t exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Financial institutions can use blockchain without needing bitcoin, ethereum, or any other publicly traded cryptocurrency. Regulated financial systems can operate on separate blockchain networks and use stablecoins or tokenized bank deposits as a means of payment, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement therefore does not represent a direct reason why the price of bitcoin should rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it&#8217;s important for the entire cryptocurrency sector for a different reason. Technology that was still perceived with great skepticism by many traditional financial institutions just a few years ago is gradually becoming part of their own modernization plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And tokenization of traditional assets may become one of the biggest connecting links between the world of cryptocurrencies and traditional finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-japonsko-nechce-kryptomenovou-revoluci-chce-rychlejsi-financni-trh-48\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Japan doesn&#8217;t want a cryptocurrency revolution. It wants a faster financial market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most interesting aspect of the entire Japanese project is ultimately its pragmatism. It&#8217;s not about replacing the stock exchange with decentralized finance or moving the Tokyo Stock Exchange into the world of cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan wants to take one of blockchain&#8217;s main technological ideas \u2013 the ability to quickly and synchronously transfer digital value \u2013 and use it within a heavily regulated financial system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the plan succeeds in being implemented in practice, an investor could in the future sell a Japanese stock and receive the funds at virtually the same moment.
