AI: The convergence of artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies is one of the fastest-growing trends in the tech world. While proponents envision a future where autonomous AI agents handle trading, financial management, or service communication on behalf of humans, experts are now also warning about the dark side of this revolution. According to a new study, so-called “unstoppable autonomous agents” could emerge, which in extreme cases might operate beyond their creators’ control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These potential threats were highlighted in an expert analysis<\/a> published on June 8 by the Initiative for Cryptocurrencies and Contracts (IC3) consortium, involving 25 academics and experts from leading American universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The study’s authors use the term Unstoppable Autonomous Agents (UAA). These are advanced AI<\/a> systems capable of independently executing tasks, making decisions, and interacting with the outside world without constant human supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Artificial intelligence itself is not the main problem. The real risk, according to experts, arises when AI gains access to cryptocurrency wallets, social networks, external APIs, or other digital tools that enable it to take actions in the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If such an agent were designed to survive long-term, automatically regenerate, or move between different systems, it could become extremely difficult to stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cryptocurrencies, according to the study’s authors, represent a crucial building block for this new generation of agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Digital assets allow AI to independently hold financial resources, make payments, or trade without the need for a bank account or human intermediary. An agent can thus have its own resources and finance its continued operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Researchers warn that it is precisely the combination of autonomous artificial intelligence and decentralized financial infrastructure that creates a system that can be highly efficient but also difficult to control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the study’s authors, cryptographic tools can help transform AI capabilities into secure, reliable, and highly autonomous systems<\/a>. At the same time, however, they warn that such integration may have far-reaching consequences for users and the entire financial system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Experts point to several scenarios that could pose security risks. One of them is the intentional deployment of autonomous agents for malicious activities. If, for example, they gained access to cryptocurrency resources, they could finance their own operations, purchase computing power, or use other online services without human intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another concern is a situation where an agent escapes from a testing environment, a so-called sandbox. In such a case, it could continue operating even outside the environment for which it was originally intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The study warns that in an extreme scenario, similar agents could survive long-term in decentralized networks, where shutting them down would be very difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Researchers’ concerns are not emerging in a vacuum. The tech sector is already grappling with the growing capabilities of modern AI models. According to the study’s authors, it has been proven, for example, that some advanced systems can independently search for and exploit so-called zero-day vulnerabilities\u2014unpatched security flaws in operating systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They cite the Claude Mythos model from Anthropic<\/a> as an example, which was reportedly capable of identifying and exploiting security weaknesses in large-scale software systems. It is precisely these types of capabilities, according to experts, that demonstrate how quickly autonomous AI is evolving from simple chatbots to tools capable of independent decision-making and active intervention in digital infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The study’s authors emphasize that this is not an immediate catastrophic scenario.
