According to the meteorological company AccuWeather, the front is expected to stretch up to 1,800 miles\u2014from western Texas to the Atlantic coast\u2014and bring ice, heavy snowfall, and power outages to more than 60 million people. Miners are therefore preparing for the possibility that they will have to temporarily shut down their machines to relieve the overloaded power grid.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is nothing new. Back in 2022, when Texas was hit by a severe winter storm, cryptocurrency miners in the state voluntarily reduced their activity to ease the burden on the power grid. They typically settle near wind or solar power plants, where they can consume excess energy during periods of overproduction. However, when the grid faces a shortage, they can shut down in a short time and &#8220;release&#8221; the electricity elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a report by the Digital Assets Research Institute this week, this model has saved Texas approximately $18 billion. We have standard procedures for seasonal changes, such as winterizing pipes. They verify transactions and record them in new blocks. The more miners participate, the higher the so-called hashrate\u2014the computing power that ensures the security of the entire network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States is currently the world&#8217;s largest mining center. The Hashrate Index platform estimates that the <a href=\"https:\/\/crypto-globe.com\/en\/south-korean-cryptocurrency-entrepreneur-to-go-to-prison-in-the-us-for-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">US<\/a> controls nearly 38% of the global hashrate. Among the biggest players in the US market are Marathon Digital Holdings and Riot Platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to data from the federal Energy Information Administration, there were more than 137 cryptocurrency mining facilities in the US in 2024.
