After the COVID-19 pandemic and massive government spending, investors&#8217; tolerance for such high debt has decreased. In addition, since mid-2022, Japanese inflation has <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/japan\/inflation-cpi\">accelerated significantly<\/a>, reaching levels not seen since the 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higher inflation raises government bond yields and makes government borrowing more expensive. &#8220;If Japan keeps rates low, it risks further yen weakness and uncontrollable inflation. Japanese startup JPYC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/boards-policy-regulation\/japan-startup-issue-first-yen-pegged-stablecoin-2025-08-19\/\">for example, plans to<\/a> issue the first stablecoin pegged to the Japanese yen later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite this year&#8217;s 7 percent strengthening of the Japanese yen against the dollar, caused by the expected decline in interest rates in the US, the fact remains that since 2021, it has <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/japan\/currency\">lost more than 40 percent of its value.<\/a> This is driving up domestic inflation and increasing pressure on the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"aioseo-you-may-be-interested-in-record-interest-in-gold-in-the-us\">You may be interested in: <a href=\"https:\/\/crypto-globe.com\/en\/record-interest-in-gold-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Record interest in gold in the US<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-us-recession-as-a-temporary-rescue\">US recession as a temporary rescue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Brooks, a possible recession in the US could bring some relief to Japan. If US GDP were to decline for two consecutive quarters, global investors could start buying government bonds in large quantities, which would lower yields and give Japan time to consolidate. However, according to Brooks, Japan will ultimately have to take unpopular measures, such as cutting spending or raising taxes.
