For many years, it was known as a cryptocurrency tax haven because it had a zero tax rate on crypto. This was greatly aided by a 2016 tax administration decision that cryptocurrencies were not subject to taxation. Four years later, the government launched <a href=\"https:\/\/freemanlaw.com\/cryptocurrency\/portugal\/\">so-called free zones<\/a> to test new blockchain technologies. At that time, a decision was made to change the law, and crypto held for less than 365 days began to be taxed at a rate of 15%. However, you can avoid this. This is also indicated by the fact that Portugal <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nomadstays.com\/digital-nomad-statistics-in-2025-a-look-into-the-evolving-lifestyle-of-location-independent-travelers\/\">appears<\/a> at the top of nomadic websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-how-to-become-a-tax-resident-in-portugal\">How to become a tax resident in Portugal?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If nothing is keeping you in Czechia, you can move to Portugal. All you need to do is live there for 183 days a year and you have the right to become a tax resident. As an EU citizen, you do not need a visa \u2013 just register with the Portuguese Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) and apply for a free certificate. This is officially enough to ensure that you do not have to pay tax on your crypto earnings in Portugal.
